Love is patient and kind.
Love is not jealous or boastful or proud…
Love never gives up, never loses faith,
is always hopeful,
and endures through every circumstance…
Three things last forever:
Faith, Hope, Love –
And the greatest of these is love.
--
At Taylor Flynn's memorial, we looked at patience as a synonym for love, especially borne out in marriage and family:
“Love never ends.” I gotta believe this is more than a pithy line Paul heard in a Johnny Mathis song. Let’s assume every word here means something, every idea is waiting to be unpacked. It would not be a waste of time to think about how love never ends.
At a wedding, I’ll talk about love, and how it doesn’t boast, how it isn’t proud, how it doesn’t envy, how it doesn’t insist on its own way, how it isn’t irritable or resentful, how it can’t stand lies and loves the truth, how it bears and endures all things.
It's so critical to start out with that understanding. And so critical for those of us who are older to encourage those starting out. Don’t discourage them, don’t tell them, 'Oh, someday life will teach you a thing or two.' Life will do what life does. Don’t discourage them.
But it’s something different – almost a different language – to talk about love after 63 years of marriage, six decades of fatherhood, five decades of making relationships with customers. An entire life serving the Lord and His church. It’s different. It’s a story that takes a long time to develop. You have to be patient. It’s better, like aged wine."
